Heinä-Elokuu 2025 / July-August 2025
Nyt on ollut valitettavan hiljaista täällä blogin puolella. Olen siitä kovin pahoillani. Petterillä oli heinäkuussa kesäloma, jolloin oltiin viikko Kroatian Dubrovnikissa. Teen tuosta reissusta oman postauksen, nyt kun on vihdoin vähän enemmän aikaa kirjoittelulle. Tuota yhtä viikkoa lukuunottamatta onkin sitten kaikki aika mennyt pihatöissä ja töissä. Tai no, käytiin me yhtenä iltana kesäteatterissa Riihimäellä mikä oli mukavaa vaihtelua pihatöille.
// It has been unfortunately quiet here on the blog. I am very sorry about that. Petteri had his summer vacation in July, when we spent a week in Dubrovnik, Croatia. I will make a separate post about that trip, now that I finally have a little more time to write. Apart from that one week, all my time has been spent on our yard and work. Or, well, we went to the summer theater in Riihimäki one evening, which was a nice change from yard work.
Meillä on unelmissa oma koira, joten alettiin valmistautumaan mahdollisen koiran saapumiseen puuaidan rakentamisella. Urakka alkoi vauhdilla. Meidän takapihalla oli vanha leikkimökki, joka oli jo parhaat päivänsä nähnyt ja sai näin meiltä purkutuomion. Leikkimökin katon poistaminen oli haastavaa ja hetken jo pelättiin että meillä menee ikä ja terveys yhden pienen mökin purussa, mutta katon jälkeen purku olikin hyvin simppeliä eikä siinä kauaa nokka tuhissut kun mökki oli jo maan tasalla.
// We dream of having our own dog, so we started preparing for the possible arrival of a dog by building a wooden fence. The project started quickly. We had an old playhouse in our backyard that had already seen its best days and thus received a demolition order from us. Removing the roof of the playhouse was challenging and for a moment we were afraid that we would use way too much time to demolish one small cottage, but after the roof, the demolition was very simple and it didn't take long as the cottage was already level with the ground.
Mökin alla oli isoja laattoja, mikä ei yllättänyt. Se mikä yllätti oli erilaisten laattojen ja pihakivien löytyminen lähes koko pihan takareunan leveydeltä. Siinä sitten saatiin kaivella pihakiviä ja laattoja nurmikon alta pois. Piha oli siis alusta lähtien yllätyksiä täynnä.
// There were large slabs under the cottage, which was not surprising. What was surprising was finding various slabs and paving stones almost the entire width of the back edge of the yard. We had to dig out paving stones and slabs from under the lawn. The yard was full of surprises from the start.
Halusimme rima-aitaa toisen naapurimme puolelle, johon teemme myöhemmin terassin. Naapurissamme on myös palju, joten rima-aita tuo hieman yksityisyyttä molemmille. Toisella puolella yksityisyyttä lisää hyvin kasvavat tuijat, joita saammekin kohta alkaa leikkaamaan. Petterin veli Sakke tuli onneksi useasti apuun, sillä metallijalkojen iskeminen maahan oli työlästä ja hikistä hommaa. Pihamme on kalliotontilla, joten metallijalat kilahtivat vähän väliä isoon kiveen tai kallioon. Urakkaa ei helpottanut heinäkuussa alkanut 30 asteen helleputki. Metallijalat saatiin kuin saatiinkin maahan ja rima-aidan pystytys alkoi. HUH!
// We wanted a slatted fence on the side of our other neighbor, where we will later build a terrace. Our neighbor also has a hot tub, so the slatted fence brings a little privacy for both of us. On the other side, privacy is added by the well-growing thujas, which we will soon start cutting. Fortunately, Petteri's brother Sakke came to help several times, because hammering the metal fence spikes into the ground was a laborious and sweaty job. Our yard is on a rocky plot, so the metal fence spikes would occasionally hit a large stone or rock. The 30-degree heat wave that started in the middle of July didn't make the job any easier. We got the metal fence spikes into the ground and could start building the slatted fence. PHEW!
Metallijalkojen hakkaaminen oli epäkiitollista hommaa, aikaa kului, mutta aita itsessään ei näyttänyt valmistuvan. Heti kun saatiin tolpat metallijalkoihin alkoi konkreettista edistymistä näkyä ja työmotivaatio kasvoi. Tämä projektihan etenee sittenkin. Valmiin rima-aidan näkeminen oli mahtavaa ja tämän jälkeen aidan pystytys jatkui tasaiseen tahtiin osio kerrallaan. Leikattiin ja maalattiin kasapäin aitalautoja, ruuvattiin laudat kiinni ja aloitettiin sama homma uudelleen. Voi sitä iloa kun vihdoin kuukauden uurastuksen jälkeen oli enää yksi lauta jäljellä. Meidän aita on valmis!!! Nyt puuttuu enää koira.
// Hammering the metal fence spikes to the ground was ungrateful work, it was time consuming and you couldn’t see the actual progression. Once we got the wooden posts to the metal fence spikes, we were able to see the fence shaping up and motivation to finish the project rose. This project is going somewhere. Seeing the finished slatted fence was amazing and after that the fence building continued at a steady pace, section by section. We cut and painted piles of fence boards, screwed the boards in their places and started the same thing over again. Oh, the joy when finally, after a month of hard work, there was only one board left. Our fence is finished!!! Now all that's missing is the dog.
Nyt huilataan ihan hetki ja odotetaan, että tilaamamme pihavarasto saapuu, jolloin pihaurakka jatkuu jälleen. Meillä puuttuu vielä aidasta portti ja voidaan tehdä se vasta sitten kun saadaan meidän pienempi puupino siirrettyä uuteen varastoon suojaan. Ehkäpä me sitten pakkasten tullessa saadaan huilata vihdoin hieman enemmän. 😀
// Now we're just going to rest for a while and wait for the yard shed we ordered to arrive, at which point the yard work will resume. We're still missing a gate for the fence and we can only do that once we've moved our smaller wood pile to the new shed. Maybe when the frost comes we'll finally be able to rest a little more. 😀
