Oulangan kansallispuisto / Oulanka National Park

Vietimme juhannusta Rukalla ja kävimme kahtena päivänä Oulangan kansallispuistossa. Kävimme vaeltamassa hieman pohjoisempana Könkään keinon ja sitten myös tietenkin Suomen suosituimman kierroksen, eli Pienen Karhunkierroksen.

// We spent Midsummer in Ruka and went on two hikes in Oulanka National Park. We hiked the Könkään Keino trail a little further up north and then of course also the most popular tour in Finland, Pieni Karhunkierros (The Little Bear Tour).

Könkään Keino 8 km

Ensimmäisenä päivänä oli hieman sateista joten päätimme lähteä kiertämään 8 km mittaista Könkään keinoa. Miksi sateisena päivänä? Jotta täällä ei olisi niin paljoa hyttysiä. 😀 Hyttysiä on Pohjois-Suomessa eniten kesäkuun alusta syyskuun loppuun. Hyttysiä olikin heti ihan mukavasti ympärillä sateen lakattua jos satuit pysähtymään.

// The first day was a bit rainy so we decided to go around the 8 km long Könkään Keino trail. Why on a rainy day? So that there wouldn't be so many mosquitoes. 😀 Mosquitoes are most common in Northern Finland from the beginning of June to the end of September. There were actually quite a few mosquitoes around us as soon as the rain stopped and if you happened to stop moving.

Sanoin Petterille aikaisemmin, että haluan syödä yhden perinteisen poronkäristyksen tällä reissulla ollessamme. Näin netistä, että Oulangan luontokeskuksesta saisi poronkäristystä, joten ajoimme sinne heti Petterin lopetettua työnsä. Ajoimme osoitteeseen Liikasenvaarantie 132, 93900 Kuusamo. Söimme elämäni parasta poronkäristystä ja jatkoimme siitä suoraan kiertämään Könkään keinoa. Kierroksella kävelimme myös paikallisten poronhoitajien käytössä olevan poroerotusaitauksen ohi. Täällä pystyi nousemaan näköalatorniin, josta aitaukset näkyivät paremmin. Tämä päivä sisälsi siis paljon poroihin liittyvää, sillä olimme nähneet paljon poroja tänne ajaessamme ja niitä käyskenteli myös kaikessa rauhassa luontokeskuksen ulkopuolella.

// I told Petteri earlier that I wanted to eat a traditional reindeer stew while we were on this trip. I saw online that the Oulanka Visitor Center had reindeer stew, so we drove there right after Petteri finished work. We drove to Liikasenvaarantie 132, 93900 Kuusamo. We ate the best reindeer stew of my life and continued straight from there to tour the Könkään Keino. On the trail we also walked past the reindeer separation fence used by local reindeer herders. Here you could go up to the observation tower, from where you could see the fences better. This day included a lot of reindeer-related activities, as we had seen a lot of reindeer on our way here and they were also walking around peacefully outside the nature center.

Könkään keino tarjosi erilaisia maisemia eikä tuntunut mitenkään kovin raskaalta. Täällä oli niin monta kohtaa jossa piti pysähtyä, ihmetellä ja ihastella. Kiutaköngäs, jonka mukaan kyseinen vaellus on nimetty, on aivan luontokeskuksen lähellä. Se kuohusi ja pauhasi ja näytti näin meille voimaansa. Täällä sai vettä sataessa katsella tarkkaan mihin sitä jalkansa laittaa kalliolla, jotta ei vaan liukastu ja joudu kosken vietäväksi.

// The Könkään Keino offered different landscapes and didn't feel too strenuous. There were so many places here where you had to stop, wonder and admire. Kiutaköngäs, after which the hike in question is named, is right near the nature center. It seethed and roared and showed us its power. Here, when it rained, you really had to watch carefully where you put your foot on the rock so that you wouldn't slip and be swept away by the rapids.

Tämän reissun kohokohta oli kuitenkin minulle näköala upeasti mutkittelevalle Oulanganjoelle. Kilistelimme Loseikon näköalapaikalla Petterin kanssa rauhassa juuri tapahtunutta asuntokauppaa. Tämä 2,5 tunnin kierros oli siis vesisateesta huolimatta aivan täydellinen.

// The highlight of this trip for me, however, was the view of the magnificently winding Oulanganjoki River. At the Loseikko viewpoint, we celebrated with Petteri the apartment deal that had just happened. So this 2.5-hour tour was absolutely perfect, despite the rain.

Pieni karhunkierros 12 km

Tämän kierroksen tietää varmasti jokainen suomalainen. Pienen karhunkierroksen sanotaan olevan kuin pienoismalli Oulangan kansallispuistosta, sillä täältä löytyy vaikka mitä nähtävää. Pieni karhunkierros houkuttelee vaeltajia koskien, riippusiltojen ja jylhien maisemien avulla. Me kiersimme kierroksen vastapäivään, mutta sen saa kulkea kumpaan suuntaan tahansa. Se mikä tosin on hyvä huomioida on se tosiasia, että tämä tosiaan on yksi Suomen suosituimmista vaelluksista. Täällä sai ohittaa kulkijoita jatkuvasti, kun taas Könkään keinolla taas näimme vain muutaman muun vaeltajan. Keliolosuhteilla oli tietysti myös merkitystä, mutta en usko, että Pienellä karhunkierroksella olisi koskaan kovin rauhallista.

// Every Finn knows this tour. Pieni Karhunkierros (The Little Bear Tour) is said to be like a miniature model of Oulanka National Park, as there is so much to see here. Pieni Karhunkierros attracts hikers with its rapids, suspension bridges and rugged landscapes. We did the tour counterclockwise, but you can go in either direction. What is good to note, however, is the fact that this is indeed one of the most popular hikes in Finland. Here you could constantly pass hikers, while on the Könkään Keino trail we only saw a few other hikers. Of course, the weather conditions also played a role, but I don't think the Pieni Karhunkierros would ever be very peaceful.

Itse nautin tällä kierroksella eniten upeista joki- ja koskimaisemista. Lisäksi rakastan riippusiltoja, sillä ne tuovat aina tietynlaista jännitystä retkeilyyn. Jätän kirjoituksen vähemmälle ja annan kuvien puhua puolestaan.

// What I enjoyed the most on this tour was the stunning river and rapids scenery. I also love the suspension bridges, as they always add a certain excitement to hiking. I'll leave the writing to a minimum and let the pictures speak for themselves.

Tämä reitti on huomattavasti raskaampi kuin Könkään keino, eikä jyrkkien nousujen ja laskujen takia sovellu kaikille. Matkan varrella oli useita portaita, osa lyhyempiä ja syvempiä kun taas osa hyvin pitkiä ja jyrkkiä. Onneksi oltiin Petterin kanssa käyty tekemässä vähän porrastreeniä Hyvinkäällä ennen reissua. Ylhäältä avautuvat näköalat palkitsevat kuitenkin aina kapuajan ja palasimme parkkipaikalle 4 tuntia myöhemmin väsyneinä, mutta onnellisina. Nyt mekin olemme kiertäneet Pienen karhunkierroksen! Mahtavaa! 🥳

// This route is considerably more difficult than the Könkään Keino route, and due to the steep climbs and descents, it is not suitable for everyone. There were several stairs along the way, some shorter and deeper, while others were very long and steep. Luckily, Petteri and I had done some stair workouts in Hyvinkää before the trip. However, the views from the top always reward the climber and we returned to the parking lot 4 hours later, tired but happy. We have now also hiked the Pieni Karhunkierros! Awesome! 🥳
