Olimme Petterin kanssa kesällä 2024 viettämässä juhannusta Rukalla, Kuusamossa. Meillä oli jo jonkin aikaa muhinut ajatus omasta koirasta, mutta emme olleet päässeet yhteisymmärrykseen koirarodusta. Minä toivoin isoa koiraa, kun taas Petteriä houkutti pienemmät koirarodut. Teimme jopa testejä netissä nähdäksemme, että tulisiko meille jokin yhteinen koirarotu tai rotu joka miellyttäisi molempia. Näin ei kuitenkaan käynyt.
// In the summer of 2024, Petteri and I spent the Midsummer in Ruka, Kuusamo. For some time, we had been toying with the idea of getting a dog, but we hadn’t been able to agree on a breed. I was hoping for a large dog, while Petteri was drawn to smaller breeds. We even took online quizzes to see if we could find a breed that would suit us both—one that would please us both—but that didn’t happen.
Lähdimme Rukalla vaeltamaan Pientä Karhunkierrosta ja yhtäkkiä vastaamme oli tulossa koira jonka ulkonäöstä pidimme molemmat. Emme kumpikaan tunnistaneet koiran rotua joten päätimme kysyä sitä omistajilta. Kyseessä oli Kooikerhondje eli suomalaisittain Koikkeri. Tykästyimme samantien koiran ulkonäköön ja olemukseen. Omistajat paljastuivat kooikerhondje kasvattajiksi ja heillä oli suunnitteilla kyseisen koiran, Linan, astutus. Vaihdoimme siinä sitten yhteystiedot, toivottelimme hyvää juhannusta ja jatkoimme vaellusta.
// While hiking the Pieni Karhunkierros trail in Ruka, we suddenly encountered a dog whose appearance we both really liked. Neither of us recognized the breed, so we decided to ask the owners. It turned out to be a Kooikerhondje. We were immediately taken with the dog’s looks and demeanor. The owners happened to be Kooikerhondje breeders, and they were planning to breed this particular dog, Lina. We exchanged contact information, wished each other a happy Midsummer, and continued on our hike.
Vaelluksen jälkeen aloimme heti selvittämään lisää koirarodusta. Luimme rotumääritelmästä, että koikkeri on ”Vilkas ja ketterä, itsevarma, riittävän sinnikäs ja sisukas, hyväluonteinen ja valpas, ei kuitenkaan äänekäs. Uskollinen, ystävällinen ja reipas.” Luimme myös, että koikkerit ovat melko terveitä, oppivat nopeasti, vaativat liikuntaa ja ovat reippaasti mukana oman perheen matkassa. Yksi tärkeä juttu minulle oli se, että koikkerin turkki on hyvin helppohoitoinen ja hylkii likaa. Itselläni oli aikaisemmin hyvin isoturkkinen afgaaninvinttikoira ja olin saanut turkinhoidosta tarpeekseni.
// After the hike, we immediately started finding out more about the breed. We read in the breed standard that a Kooikerhondje is “lively and agile, self-confident, sufficiently persistent and plucky, good-natured and alert—yet not noisy. Loyal, friendly, and spirited.” We also learned that they are generally quite healthy, learn quickly, require exercise, and are enthusiastic participants in their family’s activities. One important factor for me was that the Kooikerhondje’s coat is very easy to maintain and repels dirt. I previously owned an Afghan Hound—a dog with a very heavy coat—and I had simply had enough of coat maintenance.
Muutamaa kuukautta myöhemmin kävi kuitenkin niin, että Linan astutus ei onnistunut. Kasvattaja oli ystävällinen ja mainitsi meille muutamia kasvattajia joilla olisi kenties pentueita tiedossa lähiaikoina. Otimme yhteyttä Peetu’s kenneliin ja kävimme tutustumassa hänen koiriinsa yhteisellä lenkillä. Hänellä oli tosiaan suunnitteilla pentue ja pääsimme mukaan pentujonoon. Ultrassa näkyi kolme pentua ja niistä yksi olisi meidän. Jess! Meille tulisi vihdoin oma koira. Noh… sitten tuli kuitenkin ikävä uutinen meidän kannalta, sillä pentuja olikin syntynyt vain kaksi ja me jäimme ilman.
// A few months later, however, it turned out that the mating with Lina had not been successful. The breeder was kind and suggested a few other breeders who might have litters coming up soon. We got in touch with Peetu’s Kennel and went to meet her dogs while out for a walk together. She did indeed have a litter planned, and we were added to the waiting list. An ultrasound showed three puppies, and one of them would be ours. Yay! We were finally going to get a dog of our own. Well… then came some disappointing news for us: only two puppies were born, so we ended up empty-handed.
Seuraavaksi olimme yhteydessä Novalight’s kasvattajaan sillä heillä oli myös pentue suunnitteilla. Valitettavasti heidän koiran astutus ei onnistunut ja olimme edelleen ilman omaa pentua.
// Next, we got in touch with Novalight’s breeder, as they also had a litter planned. Unfortunately, the mating did not result in a pregnancy, and we were still left without a puppy of our own.
Aloimme jo vaipua epätoivoon oman koikkerin saamisesta, mutta sitten ensimmäinen kasvattaja ottikin meihin yhteyttä ja sanoi suunnittelevansa Linan astutusta uudestaan. Olimme innoissamme, sillä tämä oli se koikkeri johon ihastuimme. Astutus onnistui ja Lina synnytti 7 pentua 31.10.2025. Ihan uskomatonta! Me saisimme vihdoin pitkän odotuksen jälkeen oman koiran. Meillä oli jo nimi valittuna, nimi joka sopisi sekä urokselle, että nartulle. Meille kävi kumpi vain, kunhan vain saisimme oman pentusen. Petteri toivoi kuitenkin salaa narttua ja minä urosta vanhasta tottumuksesta.
// We had already begun to despair of ever getting a Kooikerhondje of our own, but then the first breeder contacted us to say they were planning to breed Lina again. We were thrilled, as this was the very Kooikerhondje we had fallen in love with. The mating was successful, and Lina gave birth to 7 puppies on October 31, 2025. It was simply incredible! After such a long wait, we were finally going to have a dog of our own. We already had a name picked out—one that would suit either a male or a female. We would have been happy with either, as long as we got a puppy of our own. Secretly, however, Petteri was hoping for a female, while I—out of long-standing habit—was hoping for a male.
Pentueessa oli 4 urosta ja 3 narttua. Kasvattaja ilmoitti, että saisimme nartun, meidän Rukan. Ruka oli pentueen esikoinen kuten mekin molemmat. Ruka oli myös isoin ja vauhdikkain. Heräsi kuulemma ensimmäisenä ja meni viimeisenä nukkumaan. Ruka oli kuulemma myös hyvin reipas, mikä sopisi meille vallan mainiosti.
// There were 4 males and 3 females in the litter. The breeder informed us that we would be getting a female—our Ruka. Ruka was the firstborn of the litter, just as both of us were in our own families. She was also the biggest and the most energetic; apparently, she was the first to wake up and the last to go to sleep. We were also told that Ruka was very spirited—a trait that suited us perfectly.

Ajoimme 9 tuntia Kemiin 20.12.2025 noutamaan meidän kallisarvoista joululahjaa. Meitä vähän jännitti mitenköhän Ruka matkustaisi pitkän automatkan täysin vieraiden ihmisten kanssa. Jännitimme kuitenkin turhaan, sillä Ruka nukkui lähes koko matkan. Meidän yhteinen matka oli alkanut.
// On December 20, 2025, we drove 9 hours to Kemi to pick up our precious Christmas gift. We were a bit nervous about how Ruka would handle the long car ride with people who were complete strangers to her. As it turned out, our worries were unfounded, as Ruka slept for almost the entire journey. Our life together had begun.
Meistä tuntuu, että meidän oli tarkoitus saada juuri Ruka meidän perheeseen. Oli kuin kohtaloa, että tapasimme Linan Rukalla, Kuusamossa ja, että mikään muista pentueista ei meidän kohdalla toiminut. Meidän pikkuinen Ruka oli koko ajan saapumassa meille.
// We feel that Ruka was simply meant to join our family. It felt like fate that we met Lina in Ruka—in Kuusamo—and that none of the other litters worked out for us. Our little Ruka was always destined to come to us.
Ruka on tuonut meille niin paljon iloa jo tämän ensimmäisen vuoden aikana. Se, että meille tulikin tyttökoira oli hyvä juttu, sillä Ruka ei koskaan tule kilpailemaan minun ihanaa Noahia vastaan. Rotuvalinta oli myös napakymppi. Emme vaihtaisi päivääkään. Muistoja on kerennyt kertyä jo kasapäin ja odotamme innolla mitä tulevaisuus tuo tullessaan. Ihanaa syntymäpäivää meidän rakas Ruuruu. <3
// Ruka has brought us so much joy already during this first year. It turned out to be a great thing that we got a female dog, as Ruka will never end up competing against my wonderful Noah. Choosing this breed was also a perfect decision. We wouldn’t trade a single day. We’ve already gathered heaps of memories, and we look forward to what the future holds. Happy birthday, our dear Ruuruu! <3
