Neljä vaellusta Hammerfestissä / Four hikes in Hammerfest
Petterillä alkoi kesäloma ja oli aika lähteä meidän joka kesäiselle lomareissulle. Viime vuonna käytiin Dubrovnikissa ja sitä edellisenä Santorinilla, mutta tänä kesänä meillä onkin oma nuori koira jota ei haluttu jättää pitkäksi aikaa hoitoon, joten päätimme lähteä autoreissulle Norjaan. Kohteeksi valikoitui pohjoisin osa Norjaa, eli Finnmark. Miksi juuri Finnmark eikä Norjan kuuluisimmat vuonot? Noh, Finnmarkiin pääsee autolla suoraan Suomesta, eikä koira tarvitse mitään lisärokotuksia Suomesta tultaessa tai Norjasta palatessa. Jos olisimme ajaneet Ruotsin kautta, niin meidän 8 kuukautinen Ruka olisi tarvinnut lisärokotteen, mitä hän ei mielestäni vielä tarvinnut. Olen itse reissanut Norjassa muutamaan otteeseen, mutta Finnmarkin alue oli minulla tutkimatta ja Petteri taas ei koskaan ollut käynyt Norjassa niin tämä reissuhan toimi oikein hyvin kaikille.
// Petteri's summer vacation started and it was time to go on our annual summer vacation trip. Last year we went to Dubrovnik and the year before that to Santorini, but this summer we have our own young dog that we didn't want to leave in care for a long time, so we decided to go on a roadtrip to Norway. The northernmost part of Norway, Finnmark, was chosen as the destination. Why Finnmark and not Norway's most famous fjords? Well, Finnmark can be reached by car directly from Finland, and the dog doesn't need any additional vaccinations when coming from Finland or returning from Norway. If we had driven through Sweden, our 8-month-old Ruka would have needed an additional vaccination, which I don't think she needed yet. I've traveled to Norway a few times myself, but I hadn't explored the Finnmark region and Petteri had never been to Norway, so this trip worked out really well for everyone.
Etelä-Suomessa tuli vettä melkein koko viikon, mutta Norjassa oli oikein mukava keli. Oli puolipilvistä ja lämpöä 15-22 asteen välillä, täydellinen sää vaelluksille. Ajoimme rajan yli Kivilompolon kohdalta ja yövyimme levähdyspaikalla Altassa. Tarkoituksena oli vaeltaa upealle Sautso kanjonille, mutta mäkäräisiä ja hyttysiä oli aivan liikaa tähän vuoden aikaan, joten päätettiin että meidän mielenterveytemme kannalta olisi parasta, että jatketaan matkaa Hammerfestiin.
// It rained in southern Finland for almost the whole week, but the weather in Norway was really nice. It was partly cloudy and warm, between 15-22 degrees, perfect weather for hiking. We drove across the border at Kivilompolo and stayed overnight at a rest stop in Alta. Our intention was to hike to the magnificent Sautso Canyon, but there were far too many blackflies and mosquitoes at this time of year, so we decided that it would be best for our mental health to continue our journey towards Hammerfest.
HANDELSTINDEN, KVALSUND
Meidän ensimmäinen vuoren huiputus oli ajomatkalla sijaitseva Handelstinden (310 m mpy), Kvalsundin kunnassa. Pieni parkkipaikka löytyi Kirkeveien päässä, josta lähti hiekkatie kohti vuoristoa. Reitti oli alkuun oikein mukava kulkuista, mutta muuttuikin sitten yhtäkkiä meidän reissun vaikeimmaksi vaellukseksi. Reitti on norjaksi keskivaativa, eli suomeksi VAATIVA ja se lähti nousemaan jyrkästi pientä, osittain hyvinkin kivisiä (sitä pientä inhottavaa liuskekiveä, jotka lähtevät mukavasti liikkeelle jalkojen alla) polkua pitkin. Onneksi näkymät olivat koko ajan todella hienot niin motivaatio huiputukseen säilyi.
// Our first mountain summit was Handelstinden (310 masl/1,017 ft a.s.l.), in the municipality of Kvalsund, which was by the road to Hammerfest. A small parking lot is at the end of Kirkeveien, where the dirt road starts towards the mountains. The route was very pleasant to walk at first, but then it suddenly turned into the most difficult hike of our trip. The route is moderately demanding in Norwegian, which is DEMANDING for the rest of us, and it started to climb steeply along a small, partly very stony (those disgusting little slates that start to move nicely under your feet) path. Fortunately, the views were really great, so the motivation to climb remained.
Handelstindin huipulla on kiva pieni maja, mutta majoihin ei saa viedä koiria sisään. Onneksi meidän kohdalla sää suosi ja pidimme pienen juoma- ja evästauon auringon alla. Reitin pituudeksi tuli vain 4 kilometriä, mutta aikaa siihen kului meiltä vajaat 2 tuntia. Emme tosin kyllä kiirehtineetkään valokuvaus- ja hengähdystaukojen takia.

// There is a nice little hut at the top of Handelstind, but dogs are not allowed inside. Luckily, the weather was on our side and we had a short break for drinks and snacks under the sun. The route was only 4 kilometers long, but it took us just under 2 hours. We weren't in a hurry, though, because of the photo and breathing breaks.
Täältä ajoimme suoraan Hammerfestiin (40 min), joka on muuten maailman pohjoisin kaupunki. Hammerfestin kirkko on hyvin näyttävä kun ajat Hammerfestin keskustaan. Yövyimme kaksi yötä Arctic Sea Hotelissa, joka oli kokemuksena ihan ok. Koirahuoneesta oli suora käynti ulos, mikä oli iso plussa ja aamupala oli hyvä. Mikä meitä harmitti oli, että hotellin sivuilla sanottiin että heillä on hyvin parkkipaikkoja, mutta paikan päälle päästyämme kävikin ilmi, että heille rakennettiin uutta parkkihallia ja auto piti jättää sinne minne mahtui ja hotellin vieressä ei juuri vapaita paikkoja ollut. Meillä kävi tuuri ja saatiin joka yöksi aina viimeinen parkkipaikka hotellin vierestä.
// From here we drove straight to Hammerfest (40 min), which is the world's northernmost city. The Hammerfest church is very impressive when you drive to the center of Hammerfest. We stayed two nights at the Arctic Sea Hotel, which was an okay experience. There was a direct exit from the dog room, which was a big plus and the breakfast was good. What annoyed us was that the hotel website said that they had plenty of parking spaces, but when we got there it turned out that they were building a new parking garage and you had to leave your car wherever it fit and there were hardly any free spaces next to the hotel. We were lucky and always got the last parking space next to the hotel every night.
YTRE FORSØL, HAMMERFEST
Pienen huilin, lounaan ja päiväunien jälkeen jatkui ulkona auringonpaiste. Päätimme lähteä ulos aurinkoon ja rannalle. Hammerfestin keskustasta ajaa noin 20 minuuttia osoitteeseen Skolveien 20, josta alkaa noin 30 minuutin vaellus ihanalle piilossa olevalle hiekkarannalle. Täällä oli hyvät opasteet ja vaellus oli hyvin helppo. Yksi kohta oli hieman hankala jalan alla liikkuvista kivistä johtuen, mutta ei haastava kunhan vain katsoi mihin jalkansa tällä muutaman metrin pituisella pätkällä laittoi.
// After a little chill, lunch and a nap, the sun was still shining outside. We decided to go out into the sun and to the beach. It is about a 20-minute drive from the center of Hammerfest to Skolveien 20, where a 30-minute hike to a lovely hidden sandy beach begins. There were good signs here and the hike was very easy. One part was a bit tricky due to rocks moving underfoot, but not challenging as long as you just watch where you put your feet on this few-meter-long stretch.
Vaelluksella ylitettiin yksi pieni kukkula, jonka takaa aukesi upea näkymä rauhalliselle rannalle. Auringonpaiste ja upea valkoinen hiekkaranta, ihan kuin etelänlomalla olisi. Minne me tulimmekaan? Tämä illuusio tosin puhkeaa siinä vaiheessa kun laitat varpaat mereen. Rannalla pääsi hyvin kastamaan varpaita Jäämereen ja uimaankin pääsee jos on tarpeeksi rohkea/hullu. Jäämeri on nimensä veroisesti hyvin kylmä.
// The hike crossed a small hill, behind which a magnificent view of a peaceful beach opened up. Sunshine and a magnificent white sandy beach, just like on a southern holiday. Are we in the South? This illusion, however, breaks down when you put your toes in the sea. On the beach, you could easily dip your toes in the Arctic Ocean and even swim if you are brave/crazy enough. The Arctic Ocean is, as its name suggests, very cold.
Me nautimme hetken täysin tyhjästä rannasta ja palasimme sitten samaa noin kilometrin mittaista polkua takaisin pienelle parkkipaikalle. Tämä vaellus oli täysin erilainen aamun hikijumpasta ja suosittelen ehdottomasti käymään rannalla, mikäli eksytte Hammerfestiin. Linkki norjalaisesta vaellussivusta löytyy taas tästä.
// We enjoyed the completely empty beach for a while and then returned along the same kilometre-long trail back to the small parking lot. This hike was completely different from the morning's sweaty HIIT-workout-hike and I definitely recommend visiting the beach if you find yourself in Hammerfest. TYVEN, HAMMERFEST
Hyvin nukutun yön jälkeen ajoimme 10 minuuttia Tunnelbakken tien päätyyn. Tässä tulee ensin urheilukenttä vastaan, mutta jatka hiekkatietä kunnes vastaan tulee portti, jonka vieressä on pieni parkkipaikka. Hiekkatietä jatketaan sitten jalan kunnes eteen tulee kartta ja vaellus kohti Tyvenin huippua voi alkaa. Kartan kohdalla voit valita jatkaa hiekkatietä pitkin, jolloin matkan pituudeksi tulee 8 km tai tehdä niin kuin me ja valita vaelluspolun joka on vajaa 3 km pitkä.
// After a good night's sleep, we drove 10 minutes to the end of Tunnelbakken Road. Here you will first come across a sports field, but continue on the dirt road until you come to a gate with a small parking lot next to it. Then continue on the dirt road on foot until you see a map and the hike towards Tyven Peak can begin. From here, you can choose to continue along the dirt road, which will make the trip 8 km long, or do as we did and choose the hiking trail, which is just under 3 km long.
Tämän, Hammerfestin suosituimman, vaelluksen takia olimme jo viikkoja käyneet tekemässä porrastreeniä Hyvinkäällä ennen reissua. Nepalilaiset sherpat ovat rakentaneet tänne kiviportaita vuosina 2021-2024. Ja portaita täällä olikin! Meidän iloksemme, meidän treeni oli selkeästi tuottanut tulosta sillä ylöskapuaminen ei tuntunut yhtään niin pahalta kuin mitä ajattelimme. Tämä vaellus on luokiteltu keskivaativaksi, mutta rappuset tekivät tästä meidän mielestä huomattavasti helpomman kuin aikaisemman Handelstindenin. Ihan viimeinen pätkä huipulle oli tuskaa, sillä siinä mentiin hiekkatietä aika pystysuoraan ylöspäin.
// Because of this hike, the most popular hike in Hammerfest, we had been doing stair training in Hyvinkää for weeks before the trip. Nepalese Sherpas have built stone steps here in 2021-2024. And there were a lot of steps here! To our delight, our training had clearly paid off because the climb up didn't feel as bad as we thought. This hike is classified as moderate, but the stairs made it significantly easier than the previous Handelstinden in our opinion. The very last stretch to the top was a pain because it involved going up a dirt road quite vertically.
Onneksi ylhäällä, korkeimmalla kohdalla (418 mpy,) oleva kaunis Tyvenhytta-maja näkyi koko loppurutistuksen ajan, niin jaksettiin perille. Keli ei ollut mitä parhain, huipulla tosiaan tuulee ja ylhäällä olevaan majaan taaskaan saanut mennä koiran kanssa. Me juotiin vähän vettä ja syötiin Jollos-karkit. Ruka sai Dentastixin ja vajaan 3 km matka takaisin autolle alkoi.
// Fortunately, the beautiful Tyvenhytta hut at the highest point (418 masl) was visible throughout the rest of the climb, so we made it there.The weather wasn't the best, it was really windy at the top and we couldn't go into the hut at the top with our dog. We drank some water and ate Jollos-candies. Ruka got a Dentastix and the almost 3 km journey back to the car began.
Maisemat tällä vaelluksella olivat hyvin karuja, mutta samalla ihan mielettömän vaikuttavia. Eipä ole ennen tullut liikuttua tällaisessa paikassa. Tietyissä paikoissa tuntui kuin olisi kulkenut Japanilaisessa kivi-puutarhassa, jossa pienten purojen solina loi uskomattoman kokemuksen. Täällä oli ihan mieletön rauha. Sanoinkuvailematon paikka. Menkää, menkää, menkää tänne ja kävelkää kaikessa rauhassa. Käyttämäni sivu löytyy tästä.
// The scenery on this hike was very rugged, but at the same time incredibly impressive. I've never been in a place like this before. In certain places it felt like I was walking in a Japanese rock garden, where the purl of small streams created an incredible experience. It was incredibly peaceful here. An indescribable place. Go, go, go here and walk in peace. The website I used is here.
STORFJELLET, HAMMERFEST
Rukan iltalenkiksi ja meidän viimeiseksi vaellukseksi täällä valikoitui 5 km pituinen lenkki Storfjell nimiselle tunturille jonne on 10 minuutin matka. Auton voi jättää lentokentän taakse, Varfjellveien alkuun, missä on pieni parkkipaikka. Tästä jatkat hieman hiekkatietä ja aloitat vaelluksen menemällä puisesta portista. Vaellus Storfjelletin huipulle (318 mpy) on helppo ja seuraat vain 2,5 km mittaista hiekkatietä suoraan huipulle.
// For our evening walk with Ruka and our last hike here, we chose a 5 km long hike to a fell called Storfjell, which is a 10-minute drive away. You can leave your car behind the airport, at the beginning of Varfjellveien, where there is a small parking lot. From here you continue along a dirt road for a bit and start the hike by going through a wooden gate. The hike to the top of Storfjellet (318 m) is easy and you only follow a 2.5 km long dirt road straight to the top.
Täällä oli paljon lenkkeilijöitä ja koiranulkoiluttajia. Selvästi siis hyvin suosittu lenkkipolku. Meitä naurattikin, että tultiin näin illan kunniaksi tekemään 30 minuutin ylämäkitreeni, sillä siltä tämä tuntui. Tie nousi lähes samalla kaltevuudella ihan huipulle asti. Kävely Storfjelletin huipulle toimi oikein hyvänä ja mukavana iltalenkkinä, mutta olihan tämä näistä meidän vaelluksista se kaikkein tylsin. Kartta löytyy tästä.
// There were a lot of joggers and dog walkers here. Clearly a very popular jogging trail. We were amused that we came to do a 30-minute uphill workout in honor of the evening, because that's what it felt like. The road climbed at almost the same gradient all the way to the top. The walk to the top of Storfjellet worked as a really good and nice evening walk, but this was the most boring of our hikes. The map can be found here.
Petteri kysyi minulta autossa, että mihin järjestykseen laittaisin tämän reissun vaellukset. Hän pyysi myös lisäämään Pallas-Yllästunturilla kiertämämme luontopolun tähän listaan. Nämä olivat kaikki hyvin erilaisia toisistaan, mikä oli hyvä juttu sillä saatiin nähdä erilaisia alueita Hammerfestissä. Ykkönen ja vitonen olivat minulle täysin selviä, mutta sitten piti hieman miettiä. Minun listani meni näin, parhaasta huonoimpaan:
Tyven - ihan oma maailmansa, jollaista en ole koskaan nähnyt.
Ytre Forsøl - kerrassaan upea ranta kaikelta muulta piilossa.
Handelstinden - kertakaikkiaan upeat vuoristomaisemat, mutta rankka vaellus kärpästen kera.
Pyhäjoen luontopolku - helposti kuljettava kierros vaihtelevassa (välillä hyvinkin rehevässä) tunturimaastossa.
Storfjellet - mukavan helppo, mutta kaiken muun näkemisen jälkeen ei iskenyt enää samalla tavalla.
Petteri kuunteli selitykseni ja sanoi sitten, että hän on kanssani aivan samaa mieltä. Fiksu mies! ;)
// Petteri asked me in the car in what order I would put the hikes on this trip. He also asked me to add the nature trail we hiked on Pallas-Yllästunturi to this list. These were all very different from each other, which was a good thing because it allowed me to see different areas in Hammerfest. Number one and five were completely clear to me, but then I had to think about it a bit. My list went like this, from best to worst:
Tyven - a world of its own, the likes of which I have never seen.
Ytre Forsøl - an absolutely stunning beach hidden from everything else.
Handelstinden - absolutely stunning mountain views, but a tough hike with flies.
Pyhäjoki Nature Trail - an easy hike in varied (sometimes very lush) fell terrain.
Storfjellet - nice and easy, but after seeing everything else, it didn't strike me in the same way anymore.
Petteri listened to my explanation and then said that he completely agreed with me. Smart guy! ;)
